Census of Marine Life U.S. National Committee (USNC) member and ocean advocate Sylvia Earle was awarded the prestigious 2009 TED Prize for her life long devotion and advocacy for the ocean and the creatures that inhabit it.

Sylvia has been dedicated to educating the public on the importance of the global ocean both in our daily lives and the health of the planet. The Technology, Entertainment, and Design (TED) 2009 Conference in Long Beach, California brought together this year’s who’s who of the technology, science, business, and arts industries. The TED prize, awarded to three people annually, grants the winner “One Wish to Change the World – No Restrictions”. On February 5th, Sylvia Earle made the following wish:

“I wish you would use all means at your disposal — films! expeditions! the web! more! — to ignite public support for a global network of marine protected areas, hope spots large enough to save and restore the ocean, the blue heart of the planet.”

Congratulations to Sylvia in this grand achievement. To read more about Sylvia, her wish, and what can be done to make her wish a reality, please visit the TED conference website.
