U.S. CoML Session entitled:
“Making Ocean Life Count: Applying Biodiversity to Marine Policy”
Saturday, February 14th from 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM
Utilizing the diverse scope, size, technology, and global nature of the Census of Marine Life (CoML), the symposium will examine how this exploratory program has provided knowledge that is applicable to the pragmatic needs of society. While the nature of CoML is basic research, project and program outcomes have critical applications to policy and management concerns, in particular: climate change; and fisheries management and conservation. Some speakers will discuss the impacts and indicators of climate change on biodiversity, primarily among coral reefs and the polar ice of the Arctic, while others will delve into the tools and technology that affect fisheries management decisions. A panel of marine experts will then explore the needs, mechanisms, strategies, and challenges in applying biodiversity to better shape marine policy and management, framed in national and international contexts.
