Sub-Saharan Africa
A Sub-Saharan African Regional Committee for Census of Marine Life was established in 2003. The committee comprises many of the countries of western and southern Africa, and has has forged strong links with the Indian Ocean Regional Committee. The Sub-Saharan African Regional Committee is hosted by the University of Cape Town in South Africa.

Charles was born in Kenya and moved to the UK at age 12. After receiving his BSc at Southampton University, he returned to Africa for his PhD at University of Cape Town (UCT, South Africa). He has been on the staff at UCT ever since, where he currently serves as a Research Fellow and Associate Professor. Charles has described 100 species new to science. Charles has wide interests in the general field of coastal marine biology and has worked on topics ranging from taxonomy and ecophysiology to community ecology and on taxa including bivalves, crustaceans, sea anemones, ascidians and fish. His current research is focused mainly on marine alien species and on the documentation of marine biodiversity patterns in Africa. |
